PICTON FLOOD EMERGENCY - HELP SAVE 80 YEARS OF PICTON SHOW
P.A. System ruined. Those crates contained our records which are now water logged.
Our precious kitchen destroyed, including appliances, fridges, cupboards and our brand new commercial double oven.
On the 5th of June 2016, Picton was ravaged by floods over 2m high. Unfortunately, the Show Grounds on Menangle St Picton, which are privately owned by the Picton District A. H & I. Society, were no exception to the utter devastation caused by the floodwaters that ripped through town. Our Annual Show, which has been held on these grounds for the past 80 years, has played a vital part of bringing Agriculture, Horticulture and Industry together with the local community.
The flood took almost everything. Entire cabinets full of perpetual trophies (up to several generations old) were picked up by the flood and carried away - we can only hope that they will turn up in the creek once the water subsides. All of our paper records from the past over 80 years were submerged in water and mud - we have conservation teams working to save as much as they can. The sheer force of the water that flowed through our grounds caused the foundations of our Hugh Wonson Memorial Hall to be washed away, resulting in the building splitting in two. Everything in our Kitchen and office is damaged and waterlogged. Half of our fencing has washed away, and the shed that contained all of our Sheep Panels that we use at the Show was caught in a landslide which washed it into the creek below. Our Ben Apps Memorial Bar and our Poultry Pavilion are complete messes inside - most of the contents will need to be replaced, as well as the buildings themselves. Our playing field out the back of our grounds has sinkholes which need to be filled. The wall was ripped off our toilet block, which had just been fitted with new toilets and freshly painted by our volunteers. Most of our buildings are no longer structurally sound, and will need to be demolished.
Our Volunteers have been working tirelessly since Monday to salvage what they can from the wreckage. There is still so much work to do, and the grounds may be out of operation for some time. We have been speaking to our insurance and the good news is that all of our buildings are somewhat covered, however our payout for the contents of each building will not cover what we have lost.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
There are multiple ways to help us get back on our feet so that we can hold our 80th Show this October.
If you would like to donate your time: Please fill out the contact form on our "Contact Us" page to outline your availability and what services you can provide us. Our Secretary will get back to you as soon as she can.
If you would like to donate money: Please have a look at the table below which outlines the sort of things that need to be donated, and the approximation of what it will cost. This is just to give a rough guide of what exactly we need to get us back on our feet. Instructions on how to donate are below - Please remember that like many Not for Profit Organisations, we are NOT registered charity so donations are NOT tax deductible.
If you would like to donate goods: The table below with money values gives a good indication of what we need to recover. Some items are of a higher priority than others, as they may not be covered by insurance. If you would like to donate goods please use the contact form to arrange this with the Secretary. Alternatively call Kathryn on 0403931142.
URGENTLY NEEDED: New wooden fencing (See photos below), Portable shelters and gazebos, permanent and temporary Signage for grounds, fridges and freezers, WiFi and communications devices, and Prize money for our Show as all of our usual Sponsors in Picton were also affected by the Flood.
